The Swoosh & The Island
Swim The Swoosh, Circle the Island
Bantham Swoosh & Burgh Island open water swims
Four days built around two of South Devon’s most iconic wild swims — one legendary river, one unforgettable island.
Swim the famous Bantham Swoosh along the River Avon, but leave the mass-event experience behind: no crowded starts, no race-day logistics, no traffic jams and no hundreds of swimmers stirring up the water. Just a small group, dedicated safety support and the chance to experience the magic of the river at your own pace — including that exhilarating final swoosh!
The following day, take on another South Devon classic: the spectacular circumnavigation of Burgh Island. Swim around this iconic island, past dramatic cliffs, through narrow gulleys, and into hidden coves, surrounded by some of the most breathtaking coastal scenery in the country.
Our coastal base in Torcross gives you space to recover properly between the big days, with beautiful food, yoga, sauna, hot tub and cold plunge.
Two iconic swims. One extraordinary adventure. No crowds, no race-day rush — just wild water, spectacular scenery and the thrill of swimming somewhere truly special.

Who's this retreat for?
Two incredible swims, two very different adventures — and some of the most beautiful water in South Devon.
The Swoosh & The Island is all about the joy of wild swimming in extraordinary places. You don’t need to be a distance swimmer or an endurance athlete, but you do need to be happy and confident in open water, with a sense of adventure!
The Bantham Swoosh is a 6km river swim, with the outgoing tide giving you a helping hand and a wonderfully exhilarating finish. Then, the next day, there’s the one-mile swim around Burgh Island — a completely different experience, with dramatic cliffs, open sea and breathtaking views from the water.
You’ll need some recent open-water swimming experience and be comfortable swimming a few kilometres without stopping. Although these distances are more accessible than our Dart 10K adventure, they’re still proper open-water swims. Sea conditions can be unpredictable, so confidence, stamina and a willingness to embrace the elements are important. We’ll have dedicated water-safety support for both adventures.
Wondering whether it’s for you? Just have a chat with Nat. We’re always happy to talk through the swims and help you decide.
Three nights. Two spectacular swims. No racing, no crowds — just the sheer joy of being out in the water, exploring South Devon at its very best.
One river. Two adventures.
The Bantham Swoosh
Six kilometres of beautiful river swimming, a helping hand from the tide and one seriously exhilarating finish!
Forget the crowds and chaos of race day. We’ll take care of all transport and logistics, with a full safety briefing before setting off down the stunning River Avon. Multiple lifeguards will accompany our small group, with dedicated water-safety support throughout.
We’ve chosen our date to make the most of a strong outgoing tide, helping carry you along the 6km route towards Bantham. And then comes the magic — the famous Swoosh, where the river gathers pace and sweeps you downstream!
Front crawl and breaststroke are both welcome. You’ll need to be a confident open-water swimmer, comfortable covering several kilometres, but the shorter distance makes this more accessible than our Dart 10K. Wetsuits are strongly recommended.
All the thrill of the legendary Bantham Swoosh, without the crowds, competition or race-day rush.
The Burgh Island Swim
Just one mile around an island — but this might be the most magical swim you’ve ever done.
The circumnavigation of Burgh Island is approximately 1.5km (one mile), but don’t let the shorter distance fool you. This is open sea, exposed to swell and changing conditions, making it potentially more challenging than the river swim.
On a calm day, it’s simply extraordinary. We’ll explore rocky gullies, swim beneath dramatic cliffs, peer into underwater kelp forests and look out for marine wildlife. Around the far side of the island, we’re often completely alone — no boats, no crowds, just us, our water safety team, and the wild beauty of the sea. It feels like another world.
We’ll have dedicated water-safety support throughout. If swell makes the circumnavigation unsafe, we’ll adapt our plans and explore another beautiful, sheltered stretch of coastline instead.
A truly magical wild swimming adventure — less about distance, more about discovering a world few people ever get to see.
The Recovery
Recovery is part of the adventure, not an afterthought. After a long swim or a wild adventure, there’s time to properly slow down, refuel and let the body reset. Wander down to the beach from the house, take an easy sea dip, stretch out in a yoga class, read, nap, or simply sit with a coffee and watch the water.
Back at base, you can move between the heat of the Finnish sauna, the shock of the Ice Tribe cold plunge, and the warmth of the Canadian hot tub, giving tired shoulders the chance to recover before the next day. Add in generous meals, snacks, good hydration and plenty of unhurried time around the table, and the whole retreat is designed to balance challenge with proper restoration.
Big days outside, followed by warmth, good food, cold water and space to do absolutely nothing.
Professional water safety
The Swoosh & The Island is supported by a dedicated water-safety team, including lifeguard support on rescue boards, with additional cover added depending on group size.
Charlie leads water safety across every Yoga Field & Sea swim. With many seasons as an RNLI and event lifeguard, he now runs his own water-safety company and has led teams across major open-water events. He has also guided hundreds of swimmers along the Devon coastline.
The team carries VHF radios, rescue equipment, FREC 3 medical kits, water and snacks, and can communicate with harbour authorities and HM Coastguard where needed.
Behind the scenes, Charlie and Nat assess swell, wind, tides, currents, water temperature and swimmer ability, with detailed route planning and contingency options prepared in advance.
The aim is simple: serious professionalism behind the scenes, so you can relax, trust the team and enjoy the river.
Between the Sea and the Ley
Our gorgeously restored Victorian retreat home sits in the heart of Torcross, a charming South Devon village on the edge of Slapton Sands. With direct access to the South West Coast Path and Slapton Ley Nature Reserve, it’s a dream for walkers, swimmers and nature lovers—think daily sea dips, wildlife spotting (hello, seals!) and endless coastal adventures right on your doorstep.
New for 2027, our custom-built traditional Finnish sauna is sauna, done properly: the right heat, a proper stove and stones, considered ventilation, and a refreshing cold plunge to complete the ritual.
You’ll also have access to our new strength room for independent training, plus a beautiful coastal coffee lounge—just moments from the sea.
We provide transport to and from the start/ end of our swim adventures – about 30 minutes away.

What our guests say
I am about to come to my third September retreat as a solo traveller. It truly is the most wonderful reset. I was initially nervous about coming alone but the atmosphere is so warm and welcoming. For me the weekend is a perfect fusion of so many of my favourite things: yoga, swimming, hiking, good company — and food!
Fiona
The location and landscape are absolutely breathtaking. Nathalie’s warmth, generosity and professionalism truly stood out. Everything felt held with care, calm and intention. It’s rare to find such a unique combination of yoga, open-water swimming and time in nature, all delivered at this level of quality. A genuinely niche and magical experience.
Sophie
Absolutely fantastic yoga, hike and swim retreat. I cannot recommend it enough. All beautifully curated by the amazing Natalie. The food was also awesome. And in such a beautiful place. 5*

All the things you may be wondering
Who is this retreat for?
This retreat is for open-water swimmers who want a proper challenge in a small, supported group. You’ll need to be comfortable swimming distances in open water and able to maintain a steady pace over 6km, as well as some experience swimming in the sea.
You don’t need to be the fastest in the group — just experienced enough to enjoy the challenge, happy outdoors, and ready for two big days in the river and in the sea.
Is there Yoga included?
Yes, we will have classes ready for you specifically designed for swimmers. Our onsite Yoga Studio is available during your stay for your own practice as well. Private classes with Natalie can also be arranged.
Can I come on my own?
Absolutely. Most guests come solo and leave with new friends. It’s a safe, relaxed space to reconnect with yourself.
What’s included?
3 nights of luxury accommodation, all meals, a professionally guided 6km river swim, a professionally guided sea swim around Burgh Island, all transport to activities, access to sauna, hot tub and plunge, yoga classes, yoga studio and plenty of downtime.
What’s not included?
Travel to and from the retreat, optional treatments (e.g. massage), and any personal extras.
What kind of food is served?
Delicious, seasonal pescatarian food prepared with care. We can cater for most dietary requirements—just let us know in advance.
Can non swimmers come too?
Yes! If you’re coming with a friend or partner who doesn’t wish to swim, they’re very welcome. They can still enjoy the retreat base, the food, the recovery facilities and we can certainly assist them with planning some beautiful coastal walks. When we swim the River, they can walk the same route and meet us at the end! When we swim the Island, they can walk (or take the sea tractor) to The Island and walk along the top!
How active is the retreat?
It’s a medium active retreat, with two quite substantial swim days. The 6km swim is assisted by the outgoing tide, but you should still expect to spend a few hours in the water, so good open-water fitness and stamina are essential. The one mile sea swim is much shorter but swimming in the sea can feel more challenging.
It’s very achievable for people who are already comfortable with distance swimming and being in open water.
How do I get there?
Torcross is around 30 minutes from Totnes (mainline station) and just over an hour from Exeter. We’ll help with lift shares or transfers if needed.
What should I pack?
We’ll send a full list before you arrive, but essentials include a well tested wetsuit, swimming hat and goggles, swimwear. We also advie hiking boots, rucksack, yoga clothes and layers for the weather.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Because the Swoosh is a river swim, sea swell isn’t a factor, and we plan the swim around the tide in advance. That means the Bantham swoosh can usually go ahead in a wide range of weather conditions.
The main things that could stop or alter the swim would be thunder/lightning, very strong winds — particularly a difficult headwind — or other safety factors outside our control. Conditions are assessed by our water-safety team, and the final decision is always based on what will give the group a safe and enjoyable experience.
Our sea swim around Burgh Island is more susceptible to swell.
If, despite all our planning, the swims cannot go ahead as planned, we will do everything we reasonably can to replace it with another memorable swim. This would most likely be a coastal swim on a different stretch of coast, depending on swell, wind and sea conditions.
One of the advantages of being based in South Devon is that we have two very different coastlines close by — one facing east and one west — so we can often find a more sheltered stretch of water when one coast is exposed. We also have some fantastic alternative coastal swims to choose from.
As with all outdoor adventure retreats, the exact route is weather-dependent and cannot be guaranteed. No refund is available if the exact swims in the planned itinerary itself cannot take place due to weather, water or safety conditions, but our priority will always be to give you the best possible alternative adventure.
What about water quality?
Water quality is an important part of our planning for both the River Avon and Burgh Island swims. We’re fortunate that Bantham and the bathing waters at Bigbury-on-Sea have all achieved Excellent water-quality classifications in the latest Environment Agency assessments.
However, even beautiful, clean-looking water can be affected by heavy rainfall, agricultural runoff or other pollution. River conditions can change quickly, and the open sea around Burgh Island is not immune to these influences.
Before each swim, we’ll check the latest available water-quality information, recent rainfall and any pollution alerts. We also assess tides, swell and weather conditions to ensure the swims are suitable.
Your safety comes first. If water quality or sea conditions give us cause for concern, we’ll change our plans and, where possible, take you on an alternative swim in a more suitable location. We’d always rather adapt the adventure than take unnecessary risks.
